Police shot at a man during a chase after a Southwest Side robbery Friday and ended up catching the man three hours later holed up in a basement, authorities said.
The robbery happened about 8 p.m. at a cell phone store at 47th Street and Kedzie Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood. Police said a citizen noticed at least two people with ski masks entering the store and called police, giving officers a jump on the situation they may not have otherwise had.
Police gave chase to one man leaving the store. He was running down an alley when he turned at police with a gun in his hand as he tried to hop a fence, Fraternal Order of Police Spokesman Patrick Camden said.
The officers shot at him but missed and the man eluded police for more than three hours until they found him hiding in the basement of someone else's home in the 4600 block of South St. Louis Avenue, police said.
He had thrown his gun through a window and then crawled into the basement, police said. A woman who lived there ran out of the home screaming that "someone was inside" and the man "wrestled" with police a bit before he was arrested.
Police confiscated a gun and charges are expected against the man, who police said is in his early 20s. Officers are still looking for one, possibly two others.
