A 24-year-old man was charged with trying to kill a police officer after a confrontation near a Metra stop Sunday night.
Nathan Haywood, 24, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, attempted first degree murder of a police officer, aggravated battery, resisting a peace officer, trying to disarm a peace officer, and trespassing. Haywood was ordered held in lieu of $750,000 bail in a hearing midday Tuesday in Cook County Criminal Court.
Police had said he was wanted on a warrant, but later clarified that the warrant was for an allegation of a parole violation involving the incident Sunday night.
Haywood was confronted by a Norfolk Southern police officer about 10:20 p.m. near the Wrightwood train stop in the Ashburn neighborhood, near 79th Street and Kedzie Avenue.
Police said Haywood beat and choked the officer, who was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center for treatment.
It's not clear what prompted the attack. Haywood lives in the 8100 block of South Spaulding Avenue, a couple blocks from where the attack occurred, police said.
