A Lake County Sheriff’s detective escaped injury  – but his car did not – late Monday when he swerved to avoid an accident and ended up stuck in the snow next to train tracks as a Metra train was approaching.

The detective managed to exit the vehicle before the train smashed into his car, and no one on the train was injured, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

The unnamed detective had been driving an unmarked 2002 Honda Accord along Illinois Highway 134 in Round Lake Park at about 10:20 p.m. Monday when a white van ahead of him abruptly stopped to make a left turn as the cars were approaching the rail crossing at Porter Drive, police said today.

The detective swerved to the right to avoid a collision with the van, but then his car got stuck in the snow along the train tracks.
