Highland Park Police are investigating an armed robbery Wednesday night at a Shell gas station by a man wearing a hoodie tightened to conceal his features, authorities said this morning.

At about 9:25 p.m., police responded to a 911 call about the robbery that had just taken place at the station at 1411 Park Ave., said Deputy Police Chief David Schwarz. Employees at the gas station said a man showed a handgun and demanded cash.

After taking an undetermined amount of money, he fled from the scene on foot, Schwarz said, and witnesses saw him run toward the nearby Ford dealership where he may have had a car or someone else waiting for him. There were no injuries.

“We’re working up leads, but we’re still in the initial phases of the investigation,” Schwarz said.

The suspect was described as a black male, about 6 foot 3 inches tall, with a thin build, wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood tightened around his face and gray pants.  A man wearing a similarly tightened hoodie has robbed stores in Woodridge, Willowbrook, Arlington Heights, and Glenview -- but Schwarz said, unlike some of the other robberies, the man did not also steal cigarettes.  Police haven't ruled out the possibility that it's the same man and an evaluation of the surveillance footage is underway, he said.

"We are looking at connections to some of the other robberies that are similar in nature," he said.

The Thornton’s gas station on Skokie Valley Road in Highland Park was robbed in August, but that incident does not appear to be connected, Schwarz said, because an arrest was made in the August robbery.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Highland Park Police Department at 847-432-7730.
