A 13-year-old girl trapped inside an apartment building was rescued Monday evening during a fire that erupted in northwest suburban Palatine.

Emergency crews responded to reports of children trapped in a second-floor apartment in the 400 block of West Palatine Road at 5:09 p.m., according to a statement from the Palatine Fire Department.

Police arrived first and confirmed one person was unaccounted for, the statement said.

Firefighters burst into the burning apartment and found a conscious 13-year-old girl trapped in a bathroom behind a closed door, the statement said.

She was carried from the building and taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, the statement said. Her condition was not disclosed.

The apartment was heavily damaged and rendered unlivable but no other apartments were affected, the statement said.

The blaze caused about $75,000 in damage, the statement said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
