A man jumped from a second-floor window and another suffered burn injuries in an overnight fire in the East Chatham neighborhood on the South Side, according to authorities.

The fire started just before 1:45 a.m. in a four-story U-shaped building with a courtyard at its center, on the 8200 block of South Ingleside Avenue.

The 55-year-old man who jumped suffered injuries to his legs and back and is expected to recover. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, authorities said.

A 45-year-old man suffered burns to his abdomen and foot, fire officials said. He was taken to Jackson Park Hospital.

Fire crews had finished most of their work by about 3 a.m. but had to bypass a hydrant closer to the fire in order to get water. No firefighters were injured.

Police aren't sure what caused the blaze but it may have started in a stairway, officials said. Authorities said the fire was suspicious but couldn't elaborate.
