A Chicago police officer working an investigation in East Hazel Crest fatally shot a driver who sped toward him, authorities said.

Chicago detectives were conducting surveillance around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday when they approached two people who had entered a vehicle in the 1900 block of West 171st Street in the south suburb, according to a Chicago police statement.

The driver, identified as Ryan Rogers, 27, accelerated toward an officer and hit the officer's vehicle. The officer fired and hit Rogers, according to the statement.

Rogers tried to drive off but was quickly taken into custody, according to police. He was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m.

The medical examiner's office has not listed Rogers' home address.

No one else was injured in the incident, which will be investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.
