A car ran into a group of pedestrians on Central Avenue just south of Belmont Avenue before 1 a.m. Saturday morning, police said, killing a 38-year-old man.
Mario Ortega had been crossing the street with three women, who were also hit, authorities said. Ortega was pronounced dead at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center at 1:10 a.m. He lived in the 4700 block of West Palmer Street in the Hermosa neighborhood.
The three women were taken to area hospitals. A 38-year-old woman was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a broken ankle, a 32-year-old woman was taken to Loyola University Medical Center with head trauma, and a 25-year-old woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with head trauma.
The car fled north on Central Avenue and hit a few more cars before coming to rest, police said. A 35-year-old man with two recent arrests for driving on a suspended license is in custody and police said charges are pending.
