A man and woman were killed this morning on I-294 in Cook County after a semitrailer truck rear-ended a vehicle, causing a six-vehicle chain-reaction crash, officials said.
The crash happened at 5:47 a.m. on the I-294 Southbound at milepost 33.5 near Elmhurst, according to Illinois state police officials.
The traffic had slowed down and the truck slammed into the back of a silver Toyota carrying the two victims. After the impact, two Hondas, a Ford and a Nissan vehicle were also involved.
The 72-year-old driver and the 56-year-old female passenger of his vehicle, both of Des Plaines, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The victims were identified as Aley Kizhakkeanthakulam, 56, of the 800 block of Steven Drive and Krishnan Kollacseril, 72, of the 9400 block of Park Lane, both of Des Plaines, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
State police officials said two lanes of southbound I-294 remained closed until after 1:30 p.m. as part of the investigation.
