In the ongoing partnership between RedEye and Chicago Recording Company, Open Mike Eagle performs “Very Much Money” at the Chicago recording space in a series called “CRC Live.”

If you haven’t heard of rapper Open Mike Eagle, chances are your favorite comedian has. With high praise from Paul F. Tompkins, Marc Maron and his good friend Hannibal Buress, the Los Angeles-based, Chicago-raised artist raps like he’s performing a stand-up set. He takes his anxieties and his acidic, pop culture-focused wit and makes songs that can be simultaneously funny, enlightening and dark. When he rapped “For those who haven’t heard of me / I’m bad at sarcasm so I work in absurdity” on his song “Dark Comedy Morning Show,” he provided the perfect introduction to his weird and heady world.

On “Very Much Money,” a highlight from his excellent 2014 album “Dark Comedy,” Eagle performs over a mesmerizing cloud-rap beat and deals lines that reference a character in Cartoon Network’s “Adventure Time” and Jean Dubuffet. It’s the kind of song that you’ll want to replay over and over again to catch all the obscure references and clever turns of phrase.

Open Mike Eagle’s latest release is this year’s “A Special Episode Of” EP. Follow him on Twitter at @Mike_Eagle and on his website, mikeeagle.net.
