Travel Channel and Sports Illustrated are teaming up for a one-hour special about the making of this year's Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
Back up boys, here are the details: "Sports Illustrated: The Making of Swimsuit '13--7 Continents, 17 Wonders" will air at 7 p.m. CT Feb. 17 on Travel.
The special will follow the models, such as the lovely Emily DiDonato shown in the photos above, the photographers, designers and, I suppose, gawkers, as they travel to exotice locales around the world for photo shoots. Sports Illustrated said Tuesday it's the first to do a fashion shoot in Antarctica,
"From battling sandstorms in the African dunes to traversing treacherous cliffs in Asia, we'll show what goes into capturing these singular moments on film," says the Travel Channel press release.
DiDonato is posing in Namibia, Africa, but the teams went to all seven continents this year, including the first swimsuit issue shoots in Antarctica, where temperatures were subfreezing. (There's a cold-weather joke here, but probably too tasteless to make.) Shoots also took place in China, Australia and Easter Island.
"Hands down, this is the most fantastic armchair adventure you can take this winter," said the channel's president, Laureen Ong. "We jumped at the chance to partner with Sports Illustrated, knowing our viewers will enjoy this fascinating and exciting travel show packed with extreme backdrops and locations. This is not an hour of just models posing on sandy beaches--this special takes viewers to all seven continents, spotlighting the most magnificent places in the world."
Sports Illustrated will reveal its cover Monday. Last year's cover model was Kate Upton. The magazine hits newsstands Feb. 12.
"The journey to all seven continents was a bold undertaking to deliver, once again, a spectacular Swimsuit production for our millions of loyal fans," said Mark Ford, president of Time Inc. Sports Group. "We are delighted that the Travel Channel will present the vibrant behind-the-scenes narrative and visuals of this epic and rigorous production. It will show a completely new and captivating perspective of the Swimsuit franchise."
