'The Strain' teaser shows eclipse, creepy message

FX gets clever with its teaser for "The Strain," its upcoming horror series from writer/director Guillermo del Toro.

Although the new teaser doesn't offer any actual series footage, it does convey the mood del Toro and FX want to set: creepy scary. The music and cinematography do all the heavy lifting in the teaser, titled "Eclipse." As the skies above New York City grow ominously darker throughout the course of a solar eclipse. When the skies go completely dark, so do the city lights.

"He is here," the title card reads as the screen goes black.

"The Strain" is based on del Toro's 2009 book trilogy with Chuck Hogan about a CDC doctor's investigation into a viral outbreak somehow connected to an ancient strain of vampirism. These vampires aren't Hollywood hotties; they're more monsters than beautiful creatures.

Corey Stoll ("House of Cards") will play Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, who with his CDC team and New Yorkers will fight the strain and vampires to save humanity. The books also have been made into comics from Dark Horse.

FX’s adaptation will premiere this summer with a 13-episode first season. Carlton Cuse will serve as showrunner. The script comes from del Toro and Hogan.

Joining Stoll in the cast are Regina King, Sean Astin, Roger Cross, Leslie Hope, Robert Maillet, Mia Maestro, Lauren Lee Smith, Miguel Gomez, Kevin Durand, David Bradley and Richard Sammel.
