Disney and Lucasfilm have introduced a hero who embodies the "rebel" part of "Star Wars Rebels."
Kanan, who is voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr., isn't the traditional Jedi knight fans have come to expect in the "Star Wars" universe. A survivor of the Emperor's Jedi purge, Kanan hides his lightsaber for fear of revealing his true identity. He uses a blaster instead.
"I like to call Kanan ‘the cowboy Jedi,'" says executive producer Dave Filoni. "He's a gunslinger that needs to put the gun away and pick up the sword again, and fight for noble causes and selfless causes."
Kanan has been underground ever since the tragedy of Order 66. The sarcastic and secretive Jedi has forsaken the ways of the Jedi Order, although his samurai-like ponytail hints at his Jedi Knight origins. He captains the starship Ghost, whose crew includes the cranky droid Chopper.
"Star Wars Rebels," which takes place between "Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith" and "Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope," shows Kanan's changing attitude about his Order just as the rebellion against the Empire sparks. In the video here, we see a tease of Kanan's clash with the Inquisitor, the Empire's Jedi hunter.
"Star Wars Rebels" is scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel before moving to its home on Disney XD.
Disney and Lucasfilm seem to be releasing new information all the time, so keep checking starwars.com and here.
