Lucasfilm and Disney on Friday introduced another character from the upcoming animated series "Star Wars Rebels."
Ezra, a 14-year-old con artist, will be the character through which viewers will witness the rise of the Rebellion.
"He's very street-smart, he's a pickpocket, he's a little thief," said Taylor Gray, who voices the character, in a press release. "But he's doing it all because he needs to survive."
Survival will be the name of the game in "Star Wars Rebels," which fits between the action in big-screen films "Episode III--Revenge of the Sith" and "Episode IV--A New Hope." Premiering with a one-hour special this fall on the Disney Channel before moving to Disney XD as a weekly series, "Rebels" will cover the beginning of the Rebellion that leads to the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia.
The show will present a new cast of heroes and viliains to the "Star Wars" universe, including secret Jedi Knight Kanan (voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr.), who captains the Ghost; cranky droid Chopper, who works on the Ghost; and The Inquisitor, a Sith Lord who takes orders directly from Darth Vader. He is tasked with hunting down the Jedi Knights who escaped the massacre by the Galactic Empire in "Revenge of the Sith." Kanan is one of those Knights.
Like Kanan, Ezra has spent a lot of time hiding out from the Empire simply because of his lifestyle.
"He doesn't really trust anyone," Rayne Roberts, creative executive of "Star Wars Rebels," said in a release. "That's kind of his motto in life. He has that hard edge at times."
Eventually Ezra will open up to fighting for a cause when he meets Kanan and crew members of the starship Ghost, who become his surrogate family. His relationship with Kanan will change a lot of Ezra's beliefs, executive producer Dave Filoni has revealed.
The Force is with Ezra, although he is unaware that when his "instinctive and reactionary" strange abilities occur, he is tapping into the ancient and powerful energy. Together Ezra and Kanan will become a big part of the Rebellion.
Tune into Disney XD's "Kickin' It" at 5 p.m. Feb. 17 and "Lab Rats" at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 17 to catch two all-new 30-second teasers for "Star Wars Rebels."
