Shirley Maclaine says 'Downton Abbey' castle is haunted

Shirley Maclaine gives up a "Downton Abbey" secret on Wednesday's episode of "Katie," telling Couric that spirits haunt Highclere Castle, where "Downton" is filmed.

"Sometimes if the paintings were upset at what the action was they would fall off the wall," Maclaine says of the original paintings in the formal dining room. "So I was right in my element. I was right at home."

Maclaine, famous for her belief in all things mystical, returns to her "Downton Abbey" role of wealthy American Martha Levinson when the international hit begins its fourth season Jan. 5 on PBS.

MacLaine also shares her Hollywood stories about Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin and Elvis Presley, among others. She talks about her new book and her beliefs about an afterlife.

The "Katie" episode airs at 3 p.m. Nov. 20 on ABC affiliate WLS-Ch. 7 in Chicago.
