Sex in America: Discovery's 'Curiosity' reveals sexual habits

Discovery Channel's "Curiosity" this Sunday delves into two things most people enjoy: sex and numbers. The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, where Alfred Kinsey conducted his groundbreaking sex survey more than 60 years ago, did a new survey that asked more than 5,000 people hundreds of questions about their most intimate sexual practices. And since I'm sitting alone writing this, I guess I'll just share some of the sex statistics the survey found and will be presented in "Curiosity: Sex in America," premiering at 8 p.m. Nov. 11. It's all extremely illuminating, but definitely not something to watch with your parents, or children.

THE ORGASM GAP
85 Percentage of men who said their partner had an orgasm the last time they had sex
64 Percentage of women who said they had an orgasm the last time they had sex

IMPORTANCE OF ORGASM
A brand new study by Nicole Prause at UCLA hooks women up to EEG machines and vaginal thermistors and shows that women actually find foreplay more exciting that orgasm, suggesting that orgasm is less exciting for them than for men--one of the reasons behind the orgasm gap.

SEXUAL ADVENTURES
70 Percentage of couples in the original Kinsey Reports who had sex exclusively in the missionary position
30 Percentage of couples in the new survey who stick exclusively to the missionary position
41 Number of different combinations of sexual activity that modern Americans try with some regularity

POSITIONS
The survey shows that women who only tried one sexual position last time they had sex orgasmed about 55 percent of the time, whereas women who tried five orgasmed 98 percent of the time.

BICURIOSITY
8 Percentage of men who describe themselves as exclusively gay
14 Percentage of men who have received oral sex from another man
2 Percentage of women who identify as exclusively lesbian
9 Percentage of women aged 20 to 24 who have performed oral sex on a woman within the last year

ORAL SEX
30 Percentage of men in the original Kinsey Reports who had received oral sex from a woman
91 Percentage of men in the new survey who had received oral sex from a woman
25 Percentage of women in the original Kinsey Reports who had received oral sex from a man
88 Percentage of women in the new survey who had received oral sex from a man

CONDOM USE
Condoms are now used in 20 percent of all sex acts, with usage highest among teens, Hispanics, and African Americans.

PROSTITUTION
4 Percentage of men who paid for sex last time they had it
< 1 Percentage of women who paid for sex last time they had it
