Jim Carter, who many know as the butler Carson on "Downton Abbey," plays Santa Claus in a disturbing new video from Greenpeace titled "An Urgent Message from Santa."
He's not the happy-go-lucky Santa you think of at Christmas. Looking worn out, disappointed and downright tragic, Santa warns of a melting Arctic.
"Dear children," he begins, "regrettably, I bring bad tidings. For some time now, melting ice here at the North Pole has made our operations and our day-to-day life intolerable and impossible. There may be no alternative but to cancel Christmas."
Santa says he has written to world leaders, including Presidents Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin, but he has not heard back from them. They are now on his naughty list, he says.
"My home in the Arctic is fast disappearing," Santa goes on, "and unless we all act urgently then I have to warn you of the possibility of an empty stocking forever more. Please help me."
The ad ends with a call to action, sharing a link to savesantashome.org where people can sign Greenpeace's petition.
