So, kilts are hot again: Sam Heughan in 'Outlander'

Starz has released the first image of Scottish actor Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser from its upcoming series "Outlander."

I wonder if he's going totally traditional--and commando--with that kilt.

In Ronald D. Moore's ("Battlestar Galactica") adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's series of eight bestsellers, Heughan plays Fraser, a Scottish warrior in 1743 who marries Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is somehow transported back to his time. Claire falls for the chivalrous Fraser, but is torn because she still loves her 1945 hubby.

And speaking of her husband ... Claire and her new (old?) beau will run into British baddie Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, who apparently is an ancestor of her 1945 hubby Frank Randall. Tobias Menzies, who played Edmure Tully in "Game of Thrones," stars as both Randall men. Irish actress Caitriona Balfe plays Claire.

Lotte Verbeek from "The Borgias" plays Geillis Duncan, a Scotswoman and friend of Claire's.

Other casting includes James Fleet as Rev. Wakefield, Graham McTavish as Dougal MacKenzie, Gary Lewis as his brother, Colum MacKenzie, Duncan Lacroix as Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, Annette Badland as Mrs. Fitzgibbons, Laura Donnelly as Jenny Fraser, Stephen Walters as Angus Mhor, and Nell Hudson as Laoghaire MacKenzie.

"Outlander" will premiere sometime in 2014.
