'Ripper Street' preview: Long Susan takes a punch

"Misfits" star Joseph Gilgun guest stars in this Saturday's episode of "Ripper Street" on BBC America.

The episode, "In My Protection," gives a nod to Charles Dickens classic "Oliver Twist," with Gilgun playing a Fagin-like character named Carmichael who runs a seedy gambling den and employs dozens of children to do all sorts of dirty work for him.

When a toy maker is beaten to death, one of those homeless kids is accused, tried and sentenced to death. The 14-year-old refuses to deny the charges against him, leading DCI Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) and Sgt. Drake (Jerome Flynn) to investigate the world of child gangs.

Their sometimes partner, American Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg), has his own reasons for looking into Carmichael, who has taken a ring that ties Jackson and his cohort, Long Susan (MyAnna Buring), to their past in the U.S.

As you can see in the preview above, Long Susan wants to get that ring back. Oh, and she can take a punch.

"In My Protection" premieres at 8 p.m. CT Jan. 26 on BBC America. It was written by show creator Richard Warlow.
