Parenting 101 tips from 'The Americans'

Philip and Elizabeth Jennings learned many valuable parenting lessons in the first season of FX's "The Americans."

Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) appear to be a typical suburban Washington, D.C., couple, but they're actually lethal KGB agents plotting to bring down America in Cold War era 1980s.

To celebrate the addictive spy thriller, Fox Home Entertainment has released a "Parenting 101" tips video. The video shares these tips, cutting them together with examples that show the Jennings doing the exact opposite.

What did mother always tell me? "Do as I say, not as I do."

  • A good American parent leads by example. Watch your language.
  • Encourage open communication and teach your family the value of telling the truth.
  • Don’t over protect your children. Instead strive to show them the value of new experiences.
  • Show your kids what it means to ‘turn the other cheek’ so they know how to deal with schoolyard bullies.
  • A good American parent never resorts to junk food and knows what good nutrition is.

"Parenting 101" is a perfect subject in Season 2. Elizabeth and Phillip will have to deal with the increasing curiousity of their teenage daughter, Paige (Holly Taylor), while keeping son Henry (Keidrich Sellati) in the dark about their secretive "work" lives. Also, they’re still spying. An FBI agent still lives next door. And they still have enemies within their own ranks.

Season 1 of "The Americans’ is currently available on Fox Home Entertianment DVD/Blu-ray. Season 2 premieres at 9 p.m. Feb. 26 on FX.
