"Merlin" finally returns to the Syfy lineup Friday with the first of the final five episodes of the entire series.
"With All My Heart" picks up where we left off--if you can remember where that is. Syfy pulled the show from the air in February just as things were heating up in Camelot. As "The Hollow Queen" aired, Morgana (Katie McGrath) had cast a spell making Gwen (Angel Coulby) her evil agent in Camelot, where the queen plotted to kill her husband, King Arthur (Bradley James), but was constantly thwarted by Merlin (Colin Morgan).
As the action picks up, time is running out for Merlin and Gaius (Richard Wilson) to reverse the spell and save Gwen from an eternity of evil. But they have their work cut out for them; Morgana will not give up her wicked puppet--and her access to Camelot--without a fight.
Coulby, who has played sweet Gwen for all five seasons, jumped at the chance to change things up for the "evil Gwen" storyline of Season 5.
"It's just so much fun being bad," Coulby said in a release. "I'm not quite sure what this says about me, but I think there's something liberating about playing a villain. Plus, I got to try to kill Bradley--um, I mean Arthur."
Coulby and McGrath, like the other cast members, have said they'll miss their characters and each other. But neither actress will long to revist Trefil, the South Wales village where the climactic scenes of "With All My Heart" were filmed.
"No matter what the weather is like anywhere else in the world, it's always raining in Trefil," Coulby said. "It's always raining and cold, or it's way too hot, and it's very exposed."
Coulby had to wade through the waters of the villages' renowned limestone quarries in "With All My Heart" (see photos above), which have been used in many of the show's episodes because, as Coulby said, "It looks fantastic on screen."
McGrath said after using the site in early seasons, the production stopped using an unused quarry on the side of a mountain that provided "high production quality." The producers decided to return for the final season.
"Sure, they're sitting in an office in London with their tea, and we're there on buses in minus-4 temperatures and hawks overhead waiting for us to die so they can feast on our bones," McGrath joked. "It was always a trial to film in Trefil."
Fans will get another look at the Trefil quarries when "With All My Heart" debuts at 9 p.m. CT May 3 on Syfy. A new episode will air each Friday through the two-part series finale, "The Diamond of the Day," airing May 24 and 31.
