'Merlin' refresher catches fans up on Seasons 1-4

As Syfy's "Merlin" returns tonight for its fifth and final season, the network has released the catch-up video above for fans.

As the events of Season 5 begin to unfold at 9 p.m. CT Jan. 4, Camelot has known peace and prosperity for three years. King Arthur (Bradley James) and Queen Guinevere (Angel Coulby) rule the kingdom, while Merlin (Colin Morgan) and Gaius (Richard Wilson) continue to protect and counsel them.

But not even Merlin can't prevent what is about to happen. The destiny of the kingdom is at stake as in "Arthur's Bane, Part 1," the first part of a two-part season premiere. The sorceress Morgana (Katie McGrath) has reappeared, wreaking havoc with Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

"The period between Seasons 4 and 5 is the most important, character-defining time for Morgana," McGrath said in a press release. "Everything she has feared about being magical has come to pass--she has been discovered, she has been locked in a dungeon, and the fact that it did has helped push her down the road to her own destiny. This has given her the extra push to be even more malevolent."

"Arthur's Bane, Part 1" finds Morgana in exile, obsessed with finding a mysterious object known as "The Diamair"--the key to all knowledge. To aid her search, Morgana has taken prisoners from throughout the kingdom--including Sir Gwaine and Sir Percival.

Merlin and Arthur join the effort to find the Knights, but it's only a matter of time until they are captured themselves, leaving Guinevere in charge of Camelot--where she is truly tested.

"Camelot is under threat once again," Coulby said. "Gwen has been left to look after the kingdom while Arthur goes away. Everything that has happened to Gwen has been working up to this point."

"Arthur's Bane, Part 1" introduces the new foe Ruadan, played by "Game of Thrones" actor Liam Cunningham. Ruadan's hatred of Camelot makes him a perfect match for the evil Morgana. The episode brings back an old acquaintance of Arthur and Merlin--a mysterious Druid named Mordred (Alexander Vlahos).
