The women of Camelot rule the action again this week when Queen Guinevere falls even further under Morgana's mystical control.
In "A Lesson in Vengeance," premiering at 9 p.m. CT Feb. 15 on Syfy, Morgana's puppet puts Morgana's sinister plan into play. But before the murder of King Arthur (Bradley James) can be carried out, his loyal stable hand Tyr Seward threatens to ruin everything. As the plot reaches its deadly climax, Merlin (Colin Morgan) senses Morgana's involvement and seeks to unravel the truth.
Angel Coulby continues her dark turn as the now deceptively evil queen who has been turned against her husband and the Knights of the Roundtable by a vengeful Morgana (Katie McGrath).
"I think everything that has happened to Gwen has been working toward this point," Coulby says. "People warned me, 'You're going to be quite different in this season.' But actually, given her level of confidence, I think it matches me a bit more. I've always been more confident than Gwen, so it comes quite naturally for me to play Gwen this way."
McGrath feels Gwen might just be better suited for the throne than Arthur.
"Gwen is willing to make the tougher decisions," she says. "I think Arthur is a softer character--it's ended up that he is good and kind and all of those things, but, ironically, Gwen would make the better ruler. She uses her wits to solve situations, sometimes tricking her prey. Arthur would probably never be that cunning."
The episode holds a special treat for fans of the sword-and-sorcerer genre. John Bradley, who guest stars as Tyr Seward, is the latest "Game of Thrones" cast member to appear in "Merlin." He plays Samwell Tarly in the HBO series that returns March 31.
