Elle named the hot actress to its 2013 list of the top "Women in Hollywood." But some pundits cried foul about the cover shot, saying that McCarthy wearing the coat was an example of fat-shaming.
McCarthy, who grew up in Plainfield, returns to TV tonight in the Season 4 premiere of her CBS comedy "Mike & Molly." The network will air back-to-back episodes beginning at 8 p.m.
McCarthy's episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" airs at 3 p.m. Monday in Chicago on WMAQ-Ch. 5. She told DeGeneres she decided to throw on the "big grey cashmere coat" during the Elle photo shoot because she misses coats living in L.A.
"I thought it was fun," she said. "The next thing I know it was like, 'How dare you where a jacket!' I'm like, 'Really?'"
The star of "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" didn't even realize the cover shot had become a "whole to do," she said, because she doesn't pay attention to online news.
"I'm like a 300-year-old woman, I don't look at emails. I don't look at any of that stuff," she said, adding later that the "Mike & Molly" studio is a two-minute drive from her house and when she gets home she's "with the kids and, you know, the purse goes in the closet and I just get mauled."
