If you've seen "Saturday Night Live" in recent years then you know the work of the Lonely Island. If you watched Sunday's Emmy telecast, you know why they do digital shorts and never actually perform live on "SNL."
The pre-recorded shorts assure that the censors won't have to work overtime, and Jon Stewart won't have to explain to his kids the explicit lyrics.
Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone gave the broadcast a messy jolt just when it needed one. The trio, joined by Michael Bolton, Ed Helms, Maya Rudolph, John Stamos and Akon, sang "SNL" favorites "I Just Had Sex," "Jack Sparrow" and "3-Way (The Golden Rule)."
All three songs were nominated for the Original Song Emmy this year. Still, I'm not wuite sure why they were asked to perform Sunday; another "SNL" song, "Justin Timberlake Monologue Song" by Timberlake, actually won at last week's Creative Arts Emmys.
But I'm happy they were, because I would never have gotten to see them "freak Bill Macy." Enjoy. Copyright © 2016, RedEye
