HBO aired a sneak peek screening of its new drama "Luck" in December, but the official premiere for the nine-episode season is set for 8 p.m. Jan. 29.

The network has released a new trailer and a featurette called "Invitation to the Set," which is basically the race track at Santa Anita Park and in other LA locations.

From director Michael Mann and "Deadwood" creator David Milch, "Luck" tells the story of pretty much all the characters that populate the horse racing world, from owners, trainers and jockeys to gamblers and mobsters. Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Jill Hennessy, Kevin Dunn, Ritchie Coster, Jason Gedrick, Ian Hart, Richard Kind and Tom Payne co-star.

The series opens as Chester "Ace" Bernstein (Hoffman) is released from a three-year-stint in federal prison after taking the fall for other mobsters. He has a plan in motion that involved his driver, Gus Demitriou (Farina), fronting as the owner of the $2 million Irish horse Ace buys.

Recurring guest stars include Patrick J. Adams, Joan Allen, W. Earl Brown, Bruce Davison, Spencer Garrett, Barry Shabaka Henley, Ted Levine, Jurgen Prochnow and Alan Rosenberg.

I'll have a complete review next week, but enjoy these previews for now.
