Calling its 2013-14 schedule Fox’s “biggest investment in original programming in our history,” Entertainment Chairman Kevin Reilly on Monday presented the network’s plans to launch original shows over all 12 months of the year.
The schedule includes five new comedies, four dramas and the network’s first “event” series, “Wayward Pines” from M. Night Shyamalan. Reilly also confirmed that the network would bring back “24” as a limited-run event series.
Other highlights of the schedule include “New Girl” getting the post-Super Bowl slot for 2014 and “Glee” taking a midseason break, returning in the spring and continuing into the summer.
The “Glee” plan is indicative of the overall Fox schedule, which will see staggered premiere dates, shows lasting anywhere from 13 to 22 episodes and one season bleeding into another. Reilly said he’d prefer abolishing the idea of the midseason, since Fox plans to offer continual new programming.
Fox beefed up its Tuesday night comedy block and moved some shows, including “Bones” and “Raising Hope,” to Friday nights, where it will air scripted programs for the first time.
Reilly wouldn’t say if all the “American Idol” judges were out, but did confirm Randy Jackson was leaving. He said the show will go back to a three-judge panel next season and that other format changes were coming.
Below is the schedule Fox released this morning, as well as short descriptions of its new series.
