'Doctor Who' returns August 23

Peter Capaldi begins his time as Doctor Who when Season 8 of the series debuts at 7 p.m. Aug. 23, BBC America announced Friday.

The network released a short teaser and the title of the feature-length premiere, "Deep Breath." Capaldi appeared as the Twelfth Doctor in the 50th anniversary special last November and again in the 2013 Christmas special. He currently can be seen--not as the Doctor but as the conniving Cardinal Richelieu in BBC America's "The Musketeers" on Sunday nights.

Jenna Coleman returns to "Doctor Who" as his companion, Clara Oswald. They will be joined by Samuel Anderson as Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School where Clara works. Guest stars include Tom Riley ("Da Vinci's Demons"), Ben Miller ("Primeval," "Death in Paradise") and Keeley Hawes ("Upstairs, Downstairs," "MI-5").

With Capaldi, creator Steven Moffat is returning to the earlier days of "Doctor Who" with an older actor playing the Time Lord. Since the show was resurrected in 2005, younger men have played him than most of those in the past.

BBC is pulling out all the stops to introduce the new Doctor and keep the show's momentum growing worldwide, launching the first ever "Doctor Who" World Tour before the new season begins. According to the network, "the largest promotional undertaking in the show's 50-year history" will kick off in Cardiff, Wales, before heading to London, Seoul, Sydney, New York, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro.

That New York stop will be Aug. 14 if you want to see them in person.
