Chicago Whovians anxiously awaiting Saturday's return of "Doctor Who" to BBC America can make a day of TARDIS time with the Ultimate "Doctor Who" screening.
The Ultimate-TV web site and BBC Home Entertainment have teamed up to salute "Chicago's favorite Doctor," Tom Baker, by showing a new, digitally re-mastered edition of "The Ark in Space," co-starring Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith and Ian Marter as Harry Sullivan. The screening takes place from 1-4 p.m. March 30 in Ferguson Lecture Hall at Columbia College Chicago, 600 S. Michigan Ave.
After the screening, they'll host an audience Q&A and panel discussion with special prize giveaways courtesy of BBC Home Entertainment. The discussion will include the impact Baker, the 4th Doctor, had on Whovians and compare his character to the new Doctor. They'll also discuss how WTTW helped cement Baker's place in Chicago TV history.
I'll be attending as a special guest, but I've been promised that I won't be put on the spot because growing up, I saw "Doctor Who" only sporadically on PBS. Still, I do remember Baker and that long knitted scarf of his. So this event should be fun for me.
The event is free, but please register at here.
"Doctor Who" premieres all new episodes with Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor at 7 p.m. Saturday on BBC America.
About "The Ark in Space": The TARDIS lands on a space station orbiting the earth in the distant future. It's seemingly deserted, but the Doctor (Fourth Doctor Tom Baker), Sarah Jane and Harry soon discover that they are not alone. Thousands of humans--the only survivors of the human race--are in cryogenic sleep, and while they've slept their ark has been invaded. A parasitic insect race--the Wirrn--has taken control and threatens the very future of mankind.
