BBC America has released the first image of Matt Smith in the 2012 "Doctor Who" Christmas special, set to air t 8 p.m. CT Dec. 25.
The holiday special was written by lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat and co-stars Jenna-Louise Coleman as Oswin, the Doctor's new companion we saw earlier this season in "Asylum of the Daleks." And since it wouldn't be Christmas without some homo-reptilians, the Doctor and presumably Oswin will cross paths with Silurians Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh) and Jenny (Catrin Stewart).
That's all the network is revealing at the moment, but stayed tuned. The annual holiday special is all the "Who" we're getting until spring, when Season 7's eight remaining episodes pick up with an adventure written by Neil Gaiman and directed by Stephen Woolfenden. BBC America revealed last week that the Doctor's iconic enemies, the Cybermen, would return to the franchise for that episode.
Warwick Davis, Tamzin Outhwaite and Jason Watkins will star as a band of misfits on a mysterious planet in the episode.
"Cybermen were always the monsters that scared me the most," Moffat said in a press release. "Not just because they were an awesome military force, but because sometimes they could be sleek and silver and right behind you without you even knowing.
"And with one of the all-time classic monsters returning, and a script from one of our finest novelists, it's no surprise we have attracted such stellar names as Tamzin, Jason and Warwick."
Gaiman earned a Hugo Award for writing his last "Doctor Who" episode, "The Doctor's Wife." The Cybermen last appeared in 2011's "Closing Time," but debuted in 1966 opposite William Hartnell's Doctor in the classic "The Tenth Planet." Over the years they have proven constant in their attempts to terrorize the Time Lord, invade our planet and destroy humanity.
