Leonardo da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist and writer--the true archetype of a Renaissance man.
In the key art for its new drama, "Da Vinci's Demons," Starz has chosen to highlight the "inventor" aspect of the great genius by placing his image in front of a sketch of one of his many inventions, the flying machine. The machine features prominently and rather spectacularly early on in the series.
Starz released the key art Wednesday, which has the phrase, "Genius Cannot Be Contained." "Da Vinci's Demons" premieres at 9 p.m. CT April 12 on Starz.
The drama, from the co-writer of "The Dark Knight Trilogy" and the upcoming "Man of Steel," David S. Goyer, presents the young da Vinci (played by Tom Riley) as a swordsman and idealistic dreamer. He's a bit of a troublemaker who doesn't get along with many of the powers that be in Renaissance Italy.
"Leonardo was a transformational figure--the original Renaissance man and the kind of genius that only emerges every thousand years or so," Goyer said in a release. "What I like about this image is that it embodies a lot of the show's themes. It's aspirational. The triumph of the human spirit over ignorance and repression--the audacity of imagination."
More from Starz: While the da Vinci depicted in the history books was renowned for his works of art and inventions that included the calculator, army tank, diving suit, solar power and many more, "Da Vinci's Demon's" depicts a 25-year-old da Vinci on the cusp of greatness, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman. In the series, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time, tortured by his unsurpassed intellect. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it.
