With their costar both co-writing and co-directing a film, cast members of "Community" probably expected to have a leg up on the competition when they auditioned for a role in "The Way Way Back," the new comedy from Oscar winners Jim Rash, who plays Dean Pelton on the NBC sitcom, and Nat Faxon.
As you can see in this newly released video from the casting process, things didn't go so well for Chicago native Danny Pudi, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs and Yvette Nicole Brown or "Saturday Night Live" cast member Will Forte.
The filmmakers eventually "settled on" Rash to play the role of Louis, but despite that managed to snag an impressive cast that includes Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, AnnaSophia Robb, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph, Liam James, Amanda Peet and Rob Corddry.
"The Way Way Back" follows 14-year-old Duncan’s (James) summer vacation with his mother, Pam (Collette), her overbearing boyfriend, Trent (Carell), and his daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin). Having a rough time fitting in, the introverted Duncan finds an unexpected friend in gregarious Owen (Rockwell), manager of the Water Wizz water park. Through his funny, clandestine friendship with Owen, Duncan slowly opens up to and begins to finally find his place in the world--all during a summer he will never forget.
Check out the funny video above and lest me know whose audition you thought was the best, or more likely the worst. "The Way Way Back" opens July 5.
