Smokey the dog has fetched a walk-on role in NBC's "Chicago Fire."
The Labrador/Retriever mix who works at Station 2 in Jacksonville, Ill., was named the winner of the "Chicago Fire" Top Dog competition during an appearance Tuesday on NBC's "Today." Smokey will appear on NBC's "Chicago Fire" later this season.
As a 6-month old puppy, Smokey was inside a home that was engulfed in flames, NBC reports. Firefighters and a vet kept her on oxygen for three days, hand fed and nurtured her.
Since then, firefighters taught her safety techniques such as "stop, drop and roll" and the now 4-year-old helps teach school children and community members.
Following the "Today" appearance of three finalists Sept. 24, Smokey was chosen by public voting on Today's web site. The finalists were chosen from more than 100 firehouse dogs nationwide that entered the contest.
