'Chicago Fire:' Tips for living in Chicago

Figuring out Chicago isn't always easy for new residents, but cast members of "Chicago Fire" are here to help.

Six TV shows currently are filming full-time in Chicago and one part-time. Besides "Fire," its NBC spin-off, "Chicago PD," is shooting around the city. Other shows filming here include: NBC's "Crisis," a political thriller starring Dermot Mulroney and Gillian Anderson; ABC's "Mind Games," a drama about two brothers (Christian Slater and Steve Zahn) who run a fixer agency; ABC's "Betrayal," a legal drama about a woman (Hannah Ware) who has an affair with a lawyer (Stuart Townsend) who faces her husband in court; and USA's "Sirens," about three oddball Chicago EMTs. Showtime's "Shameless" films its exterior scenes in Chicago.

With so many actors and crew members coming to Chicago, I asked "Fire" cast members to offer their tips about living in the Windy City during a recent visit to the NBC's drama's set.

"Buy warm clothes for the winter, real warm, in fact—extra thick," said Eamonn Walker, echoing the most common advice from cast members Taylor Kinney, Lauren German, Charlie Barnett, David Eigenberg, Yuri Sardarov, Joe Minoso, Christian Stolte and Jeff Hephner.

If the managed to stay on subject at all, they offered suggestions that are more fun than helpful: take boxing classes at Park District gyms, play WhirlyBall or in city sports leagues, experience the city's dining culture, get a house with a yard.
Hephner, who filmed Starz' "Boss" here, said he loves the city.

"When people come here I'm like, 'You guys, get ready to be in a real city. There's everything here,'" he said. "I've seen improv shows. I've seen live music. I've seen country, rock. I've seen a ton of jazz. I mean, it's amazing what's here every single night.

"I'm running for mayor, too, by the way."

"Chicago Fire" begins its second season at 9 p.m. CT Sept. 24 on NBC. If you can't view the video at the top of this page, go here.
