It's been a long time since pirates have sailed onto the small screen. The first trailer for Starz's upcoming pirate adventure series "Black Sails" has me ready for the high seas.
Executive produced by "Transformers" producer Michael Bay and set to sail in early 2014, "Black Seas" takes place 20 years before the events in Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island." The eight-episode first season stars Toby Stephens as Captain Flint and Luke Arnold as a young John Silver.
"Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name John Silver," says a Starz release. "Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day--a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality."
Stephens should be familiar to fans of British TV, having starred in "Vexed," "Robin Hood" and the miniseries "Jane Eyre." He played big bad Gustav Graves in the film "Die Another Day."
An Aussie, Arnold has appeared in "McLeod's Daughters," "Rush" and "Rescue: Special Ops" on TV Down Under and in the film "Broken Hill."
Those fantastic abs you see in the trailer belong to Zack McGowan, who has spent time in Chicago while playing Jody in Showtime's "Shameless." In "Sails" he stars as Captain Charles Vane, a rival pirate captain of Flint's.
If you watch "Merlin," you probably noticed another abtastic actor, Tom Hopper, who starred as Sir Percival. In "Sails" he plays as Billy Bones, first mate of Flint's ship, The Walrus.
Other co-stars include Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie, a beautiful and determined woman who runs the smuggling operation on New Providence; Jessica Parker Kennedy ("The Secret Circle") as Max, a tortured young prostitute who sees the dark side of New Providence, and Clara Paget plays the beautiful but cold-blooded Anne Bonny.
"Black Sails" was created by Jon Steinberg ("Jericho") and Robert Levine ("Touch") and is exec produced by Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. It is currently filming in Cape Town, South Africa.
