LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - Marvel-Disney's "Guardians of the Galaxy" has crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office.

The film has taken in $255.2 million domestically as of Monday after winning the box office last weekend. It should soon surpass Marvel-Disney's "Captain America" at $259.8 million to become the year's top domestic grosser. Disney noted that it also released the year's fifth-highest domestic grosser with "Maleficent" at $237.6 million.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" has grossed $245.3 million with several key markets yet to open, including Germany, Italy, Japan and China.

The tentpole opened Aug. 1 and set the record for the biggest August domestic opening of all time by earning $94.3 million.

Paramount's "Transformers: Age of Extinction" is the top worldwide grosser this year with slightly over $1 billion.

Disney noted that the soundtrack for the film "Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1" spent two straight weeks at first place on the Billboard Top 200 Chart.
