Coming the second week in March from chef Michael Kornick and David Morton (DMK Burger Bar, Fish Bar, pictured) is Ada Street, a neighborhood tavern with a focus on both after-work drinks and the late-night crowd. (Perhaps from the neighboring music venue Hideout?)
“It’s really not even a restaurant; it’s more of a tavern,” said Kornick in an audio clip offering his comments on the concept. While Kornick’s other “little joints” -- Fish Bar and DMK -- focus heavily on beer, he says the cocktail menu at Ada Street will highlight wine and spirits, with former Drawing Room mixologist Tim Lacey at the helm.
Pull up a chair at the 16-seat bar and order the Felonious Monk with Plymouth gin, yellow chartreuse, Benedictine, angostura bitters, egg white and Belgian Abbey ale or an All Tomorrow’s Parties with the Italian liqueur Fernet Branca, ginger beer and crushed ice.
Nestled in the North Side's off-the-beaten-path steel district, it wouldn’t be a Michael Kornick concept without killer food. On the menu there will be plenty of “small bar” fare from chef Zoe Schor, who hails from Los Angeles. Dishes include salmon tartare with salmon caviar, salmon bacon and smoked bacon, or chicken-fried quail with braised escarole and bacon gravy. Unique sides include polenta fries with tobacco mash aioli sauce.
As for the space itself, expect exposed brick, modern light fixtures and long banquettes covered with authentic U.S. Army blankets. Other design highlights include a floor-to-ceiling liquor storage case and a cabinet full of vinyl records that guests can select as the soundtrack to their dining or drinking experience.
Outside, there’s an enclosed private garden patio, which will be an extension of the dining room when a garage door opens up during summer months. Expect seasonal events such as movie nights, with food and beverages created around those occasions.
Ada Street will be open from 6 p.m.-1 a.m. Sunday and Wednesday-Thursday as well as 6 p.m.-2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. It is closed Monday and Tuesday.
