"Kitchen's closed." Whether prompted by insomnia or intoxication, if you're out past midnight and hungry, hearing those two words from your server are about as damning as it gets. Luckily, plenty of bars and restaurants are offering either a condensed version of their main menu or the whole shebang well past usual closing times. Here's where you can snack on sushi, curry popcorn and other nibbles to make the dead of night a little more delicious.
The Purple Pig

You won't get any abbreviated options at this Mag Mile wine bar, which serves its full menu all day and recently bumped back its closing time. "We're ready to go for people who are just getting off work and are looking for something to eat of substance—or maybe went to a movie or the theater and just want a little bite," chef Jimmy Bannos Sr. said. Options range from hearty fare such as the Berkshire pork chop with fava beans and Greek yogurt ($18) to roasted corn salad with mushrooms, walnuts and fried rosemary ($8).

At this Bucktown bar, you can snack on complimentary gourmet popcorn seasoned with roasted garlic, curry, espresso and other flavors or, if it's a Thursday night, order a $3 homemade tamale. Two types are offered each week; recent options have ranged from Moroccan lamb with feta cheese to corned beef and cabbage, served open-faced in a corn husk. "They're the perfect snack because you can hold it in your hand, and they're boldly flavored," chef Troy Graves said.
Kitchen open until: 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Monday-Friday for popcorn and 3 a.m. Saturday; late-night tamales from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Thursday
Hash House A Go Go

This Gold Coast spot's filling late-night fare is ideal "whether you want something to fill you up to prevent a hangover the next morning or want a late dinner," managing partner Brad Gold said. Choose from a massive platter of chicken and bacon waffles ($15.95), a crab cake served over chilled basil pesto pasta ($9.95) or sage fried chicken eggs Benedict ($15.95).

The Savoy's late-night menu kicks off at 10 p.m. and includes popular lunch and dinner picks like coconut-red curry mussels ($12) with toasted sourdough. Some dishes have undergone a midnight makeover: The lobster roll ($14), for example, is served with a salad at lunch but comes with cocktail-friendly curly fries at night. Decadent desserts served late include whipped peanut butter pie with an Oreo crust ($7) and homemade beet ice cream ($5).

Stout Barrel House & Galley

Stumbling distance away from River North’s bumpin’ clubs, this polished pub serves about a dozen dishes into the early hours of the morning, including tuna tacos ($12) and a fried egg-topped burger ($15). For something more bite-sized, go for the white cheddar and arugula sliders ($4 each), which you can order crowned with a quail egg. For a group, sliders are also available to-go in packs of five, ten, 15, 30, or “whatever amount you want to do,” manager Colin Mewhirter said.

This recently opened Gold Coast eatery has a fish-focused midnight menu that includes more than a dozen sashimi selections, signature maki and shared plates such as tempura-fried seasonal vegetables ($10) and pineapple shrimp sweet-and-sour skewer ($8).
