In a marriage that didn't last more than a handful of weeks, veteran chef Jackie Shen (Jackie's, Lawry's the Prime Rib, Red Light, Chicago Cut Steakhouse) has left as chef of Argent, the restaurant in the Dana Hotel (660 N. State St.).
The problem seems to be that Argent had too many decision-makers: Shen, brought in to be head chef, and Rodelio Aglibot, the former Sunda chef hired as culinary director. It was apparent, Shen says, that the two didn't share the same vision and approach. Shen bristled at being directed, was upset that her name wasn't included in restaurant publicity, and felt the writing was on the wall.
"I've gained so much respect from colleagues and chef friends over 30 years," she said. "I wasn't about to have this one project ruin me."
So Shen resigned and is already in talks with a restaurant owner about another project.
"I was having coffee in my yard this morning with my dog," she said, "and I didn't have a headache, any my shoulders didn't hurt and my head didn't hurt. So I guess I did the right thing in not staying there. I think now I can take it easy just a bit."
