David Cromer may helm 'Rent' at American Theater Company

The Broadway director David Cromer is in talks with American Theater Company about directing the Chicago company's spring production of Jonathan Larson's "Rent."

Artistic director PJ Paparelli confirmed the discussions Monday but said nothing was yet set. "It depends on David's schedule," Paparelli said. "We won't know for a couple of weeks."

Cromer's schedule opened up a little with the postponement of the Broadway production of "Sweet Bird of Youth" starring Nicole Kidman, but he remains in development work on the Broadway-bound "Yank."

Cromer has said publicly that he is dying to direct a musical; his ties both to Chicago and American Theater Company are long-standing. "Rent" is being billed as a co-production with  About Face Theatre.
