Sorry, this week’s episode yet again lacks any girl time with Shoshanna. But to cheer you up, you do get to see Ray flip out on a neighbor of the coffee shop, Hannah get some sexytime with said neighbor, an unfortunate incident with a shower sauna and a naked ping pong session.
Season 2, Episode 5“Even Hannah is surprised when she’s attracted to a fortysomething doctor and his life of unspectacular stability.”
Memorable quotes"OK, I'm pretty sure I invented it, and I'm kind of freaking out...sexit." —Hannah
"You're making a sexy exit, that's a sexit." —Hannah
"Neighbor to neighbor. What a world we live in when we can just talk to each other, neighbor to neighbor, just leaning against the fence and crack open a frosty one and cup each other's balls and sing kumbaya!" —Ray
"There was a police officer in attendance, third row, right in front. You know why he came? Because he likes to see me play the fuckin' body drums...corporeal percussion!" — Ray
"What the fuck are you guys looking at? Go back to your panda videos before I turn off the wifi." —Ray
"I could be putting myself in a Ted Bundy situation. He also looked handsome, clean and probably had a brownstone." —Hannah
"I'll see you around, but not by your trash cans." —Hannah
"I always thought that was a cool sports guy name, like Trent or Riley." —Hannah
"Were you planning for guests?" —Hannah "No, but I was planning for steak." —Joshua
"Not like you're in Toy Story. Do it." —Hannah
"What happens if a doctor calls in sick?" —Hannah "10 or 20 people die." —Joshua
"I thought I was a gummy worm for like 7 minutes." —Hannah
"One time, I asked somebody to punch me in the chest and then come on that spot." —Hannah
Best sceneIt’s not the naked ping pong scene or even the scene where Hannah spills her guts to Joshua as he strokes her wet hair while she wears a bathrobe. Stay with me for a second.
It’s the very brief scene on the patio, with Joshua reading the newspaper and Hannah eating an orange. Here, we can see Hannah starting to go over the edge after this whirlwind sexcapade she’s had with a married (separated) doctor in his brownstone. We can actually see the wheels of self-doubt, of panic, of confused bliss working their way around that brain of hers before they send her off the cliff in the next scene (keep reading). She had a seemingly good thing going with Patrick Wilson and his rock-hard body, but the minute she succombs to her true feelings and expresses them to a total stranger, she’s feels as if she's left out to dry. (But she couldn't even get his name right, so is she just desperate to express out loud without much care to whom? Probably.)
In this scene, everything is both possible and extremely scary for Hannah: This man in front of me wants me, and despite the many years of fighting this very scenario of perfection off, I think I might want him, too. It’s something every woman--and most men, actually--can relate to at some point in life.
Winner: HannahLena Dunham's sobby monologue in the arms of hot hot Joshua, while not the best-acted moment of her life, was one of the most poignant parts of the show for me so far. This, it seems, is what Lena has really been wanting to say all along. While Hannah's full of creativity and art, and may be the most self-involved 20-something currently walking the planet, she also wants exactly the same thing as the rest of us—to be happy and to be loved, and she doesn't feel either. "Please don't tell anyone this but I want to be happy. Yeah, but I didn't think that I did. I made a promise such a long time ago that I was gonna take in experiences, all of them, and tell people about them and maybe save them. But it gets so tiring trying to take in all the experiences for everybody, letting anybody say anything to me." She's lonely and really unhappy—but for the first time, she finally really gets it. This could be a really amazing turning point for her.
Loser: RaySince this oddball episode only featured three characters, one of them had to get the shitty end of the stick. This week finds Ray in an especially grumpy (har.) mood at Grumpy's, and doesn't deal well with his trashcan confrontation with Joshua. We do, however, learn that he likes to play the body drums.
We’ll be back next week with another “Girls” recap. What’s to come? The return of Adam! Adam and Ray go on an unexpected adventure in Staten Island! We see Shoshanna for about two minutes! Marnie thinks she's entering girlfriend territory with Booth Jonathan! And Hannah lands an e-book deal.
