Can Matt Ulery's new album match last year's triumph, 'By a Little Light'?

Larry Coryell: The stylistically eclectic guitarist flourishes in practically any musical language, but in recent years his Chicago visits have shown him going back to the basics – hard-core jazz. He'll lead his great Chicago trio, with bassist Larry Gray and drummer Paul Wertico. 8 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 4, 8 and 10 p.m. Sunday; at the Jazz Showcase, 806 S. Plymouth Ct.; $30-$45; 312-360-0234 or jazzshowcase.com

Paul Marinaro: The recent release of "Without a Song," Marinaro's eloquent debut album, has made him one of the most talked-about Chicago vocalists in years. He'll sing excerpts of that profound recording, and other repertoire, in an intimate room well suited to his American songbook repertoire. 6:30 p.m. Friday at Katerina's, 1920 W. Irving Park Rd.; no cover; 773-348-7592 or katerinas.com

Ari Brown: A magisterial Chicago tenor man who can play mainstream, experimental and bluesy idioms with equal conviction, Brown appears on the weekly sessions presented by the non-profit Hyde Park Jazz Society. 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Sunday at Room 43, 1043 E. 43d St.; $10; valet parking available; hydeparkjazzsociety.com

Joan Curto: A leading Chicago cabaret artist, Curto will revive her show "Joan Curto Sings Cole Porter: From Major to Minor," exploring the enormous catalog of one of America's most distinctive songwriters. The event also will celebrate the release of Curto's first studio album in nearly a decade, named after the show and including tunes such as "I Love Paris," "In the Still of the Night," "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." 8 p.m. Friday at Davenport's, 1383 N. Milwaukee Ave.; $20 and two-drink minimum; 773-278-1830 or davenportspianobar.com
