'Gimme the Loot' review: Unlikable underdogs

I don’t know the last time I rooted against main characters as much as I did Malcolm (Ty Hickson) and Sofia (Tashiana Washington), New York graffiti artists scheming to tag the giant apple at Citi Field. They’re thieves whose priorities are so out of whack that even when Malcolm declares his love after meeting Ginnie (Zoe Lescaze) during a pot delivery, he still wants to break into her house and steal jewelry to help his cause. Somehow writer-director Adam Leon’s debut feature won a prize at SXSW.

He may know the streets of NYC, but he also promotes robbery and can’t be serious in expecting us to care whether Malcolm and Sofia become more than friends. You’ll just wish they get caught.
