Elliott Serrano, For RedEye
9:42 PM CDT, April 11, 2012
Starting on Friday, April 13, 2012, the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) will be kicking off at McCormick Place. There will be celebrity guests, movie and television stars, and superstars from the word of comic books in attendance. Of course, you can't have one of the biggest comic-book and entertainment conventions in Chicago without the Redeye Geek taking part.
I'll be at C2E2 throughout the weekend, getting my geek on and enjoying the festivities like any other fanboy would; I'll also be sitting on a couple panels and even moderating a Q&A for one of the biggest names that will be appearing at the show!
Here's what I'll be up to:
On Friday I'll be on the lookout for "agents" from the legendary "Men in Black" who'll be previewing the NEW OFFICIALLY LICENSED Men In Black 3 Sunglasses, produced by Chicago-based company Premium Surge Promotions. I've spoken with these guys and they are a great bunch of geeky folks who just love creating things that other geeks will love. You can check out the glasses on their Facebook Page. (And I just may have a couple pair to give away myself. If you follow me on Twitter, I can let you know what you need to do to get a pair from me.)
I'm going to check out the Profiles in History: Captain America Auction where props and costumes from the film "Captain America: The First Avenger" will be on display. Perhaps I'll get a chance to talk to some of the folks there and get a first-hand look at some of these movie relics?
Then I'll check out the Meet & Greet with ShiftyLook Talent. Video game and comic book fans will want to drop by and meet: Ben McCool, writer of The Five-Dimensional Adventures of Dirk Davies; Xevious writer Mike Costa; Xevious artist, and local-Chicago talent, Mike Norton; and Bravoman artist Dax Gordine. You'll be able to take their pictures next to the arcade games that inspired their comics and even grab an autograph! (30 minutes, Friday at 2:00PM at the ShiftyLook Freeplay Retro Arcade & Chalk Art Fun Zone)
I'll also be stopping by the DC Entertainment Booth where they will be promoting the We Can Be Heroes Campaign, a giving campaign designed to raise awareness and funds for the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. They will have a special interactive green screen where attendees can have their picture taken and uploaded to the We Can Be Heroes website. And at 2:30 at the DC Direct Collectibles Panel, Geoff Johns and Jim Fletcher will be making a special announcement involving the campaign and the Justice League! I have a feeling that it's gonna be something that puts the "hero" in "superhero."
Moving on to Saturday, I'll be sitting on the Dynamite Entertainment Panel with a whole stable of talent from Dynamite Comics. Phil Hester - writer of the "Bionic Man" comic book - will be there, and you may just see us arm-wrestle for the right to work on the book! Oh, who am I kidding, Phil would beat me hands down. If you stop by, though, I may drop some spoilery tidbits about what's to come in my own title "Army of Darkness."
From there it will be back to the show floor until I return to the panel area for the first ever "Keep Your Pants On: Dating Advice for Geek, Nerds and the Like" Relationship Panel. I'll be co-hosting the panel with Kate Kotler, my co-author for the similarly-named dating advice column that we have on BleedingCool.com. The panel will be moderated by local singer/song-writer/geek gal Laura Green. We'll also have some more friends on board to help keep the conversation lively!
And you'll want to stick around afterward for the Video Game Characters Reborn! Panel, also hosted by ShiftyLook. Word on the street is that they're going to unveil some nifty new projects and that comics-superpro Jimmy Palmiotti is going to make an announcement.
Wrapping up on Sunday, I'll be moderating the Anne Rice Spotlight Panel. Starting at 1:15 pm, Ms. Rice and I will discuss her latest novel "The Wolf Gift" as well as her long and illustrious writing career. I'll admit that I'm incredibly excited and equally nervous with the prospect of sitting down with one of the most influential writers in modern America.
I'll then be hopping over a couple rooms to moderate the Chicago Talent Spotlight Panel where I'll be sitting with an all-star roster of local comic-book pros: Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother, Beasts of Burden); Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash, Army of Darkness); Mike Norton (Battlepug, Young Justice); and Jenny Frison (Angel, House of Night). We'll discuss the challenges of working in the comics industry while living in the Midwest.
Of course I'll also be checking out the vendors, Artists' Alley and all the great costumes that cosplayers will be wearing.
You can keep track of where I am by following me on Twitter!
