Spring into Action with MLG! Written By Sean “Blazek” Emes, Edited by Jordan “Doomhammer” Kahn
It feels like a short time ago we were gathered in Columbus for an epic competitive gaming event, yet already the spring season has taken off with turbo! Following the MLG Winter Championships, announcements about the spring season came out catching gamers by surprise. The spring season will be packed full with multiple online and live events, culminating in the most epic MLG event to date at beginning of June in Anaheim.
Starting everything off, we got to watch the top 8 players from the winter championship battle it out at the first Spring Arena this past weekend. Only the top four of the world-class players in this tournament were guaranteed a spot in Pool Play in the Spring Championship, but all the rest will be invited to the second online arena tournament for another chance.
What’s that, more than one arena this season?! Yes you read correctly, in fact much more! By the time this article is posted an open qualifier will already have been played in Korea, North America, and Europe. From these qualifiers of 128 players, the top 8 from each region, along with the bottom four from the first arena and the competitors who placed 9 th - 80th in the winter championships, will be invited to an online tournament during the final week of April. This tournament will be recorded, though sadly not live, and will be available to view soon after it takes place.
Once all that is done, we will go to the second, and even more exciting, Spring Arena 2! This weekend tournament will be streamed live and will feature the top 4 placements from arena 1 along with top players from Korea, North America, and Europe in a 32 competitor tournament! If you happen to be a Starcraft fan then you will want to make sure to clear out the weekend of May 18th, as an incredible amount of awesome Starcraft gaming action is virtually guaranteed!
But perhaps you aren’t just a Starcraft fan, maybe you prefer the fast pace hype of the fighting game genre? Well there is some great news for you! At the end of the Winter Championship, MLG Adam hinted at the possibility for a Fighting Game Arena, similar in structure to the Starcraft Winter Arena. This idea was later confirmed on vVv Gaming’s Podcast, The Loser’s Bracket, and the dates were finally announced for April 28th, this coming weekend!
And to top everything off, everyone who’s anyone will be making their way to southern California for the Spring Championship in Anaheim, June 8th-10th. The turnout for Anaheim last year was one of the most successful MLG events to date, and this year MLG has promised that this event will be even better. What could they possibly have in store for us? There are many rumors floating around the gaming community, and so far the strongest source comes once again from vVv Gaming’s The Loser’s Bracket Podcast. In a recent interview with MLG Adam, his description of hinted titles strongly matched with both League of Legends (in a new type of competitive format) and Blizzard’s upcoming expansion for Starcraft: Heart of the Swarm. Only time will tell, but to not make the trip to Anaheim may be the biggest mistake a fan could make this year, so start saving that money and mark the date June 8th, because there is only one place to be!
