Now that Geek To Me has gotten a new home on the main Redeye home page, it's time to get caught up with all the great gaming news that my friends at vVv Gaming provide us each week:
MLG Columbus Starts the Year off With A Bang! Written by Sean “Blazek” Emes, Edited by Jordan “Doomhammer” Kahn
Even though gamers wanted eSports to start with a bang in the 2012 season, they were not prepared for the big guns MLG rolled out this past weekend in Columbus, Ohio. To say that the event was a success would be putting it lightly. The event included the return of fighting games to the circuit with Mortal Kombat 9, Soul Calibur 5, and King of Fighers 13, each with some incredible prize pools. The beast known as Starcraft 2, and the 256 competitors for the title, took center stage and even with extra rows of chairs, there still weren’t enough seats! Lastly, Halo returned in full force with amazing community support demonstrating that they were there to stay.
Every day had something to offer and a reason to watch, with consistent amazing matchups and
phenomenal gameplay. The pacing and the action all built up to the finals in each of the major titles and the clever timing by MLG put all the final matches at roughly the same time. The crowds in front of each stage vied to see who could be the loudest. Starcraft showed us a rematch from the winter arena, featuring MarineKingPrime versus DongRaeGu with MKP once again demonstrating his ability to adapt and compete at the highest levels. He once again defeated the (arguably) best Zerg player in the world, and walked home with a first place finish!
In the Halo section, the crowd was treated with a thrilling final between Status Quo and Instinct. Instinct, the national champions from 2011, played extremely well to defend their title and the matches went back and forth multiple times. In game 11 Instinct had the lead and was just a second away from victory, but Status Quo jumped forward with an epic comeback, winning the final team slayer by two kills, 50-48.
Did you happen to miss all the hype? Don't fret! All VOD's can be viewed HERE!
Finally, Mortal Kombat 9 saw two of the world’s strongest players battle it out for the title when vVv REO faced his teammate and partner vVv CDjr. Starting with a 3-1 lead, CDjr had the continuation series advantage, but Reo played undaunted and brought the score back to the final match point 5-5. The last round seemed to be anyone’s game but in the final moment CDjr took the victory and the championship!
In King of Fighters 13, vVv Romance made his vVv debut at his first MLG event. As the starting event of the weekend the crowd got behind the action and was there to cheer him on as he battled his way through the winners bracket, ending with a third place finish.
The vVv community was there in force, and with competitors in each game it was a busy time moving between matches to spectate. Many returning faces and some first time members came to show support, watch awesome gameplay and have a good time together. The players definitely gave the fans a show, and the final tally was an amazing first and second in Mortal Kombat, third in King of Fighters, top 48 in StarCraft 2 from vVv Ruff and vVv Glon, and a final Halo top 24 finish from vVv Ability.
MLG Columbus 2012 was by far the best eSports event I have ever been to, and MLG promises even better events to come. Somehow Major League Gaming continues step up their game and improve the quality of every event to demonstrate that they are the premier face of eSports. While it is hard to imagine things getting much better, it has been strongly hinted that MLG Anaheim is the event not to be missed. Best start planning your summer vacation time now!
