When I saw the video posted above, I was pretty much aghast. I knew that the current NWA Heavyweight Champion Adam Pearce was in the midst of a feud with Colt Cabana, but I was unaware of the level it had escalated to. Setting an opponent on fire is one of those old-school stunts that raises the drama, but let's face it, it's still dangerous. That just goes to show the amount of passion that these two pro-wrestlers have for creating compelling matches and a riveting storyline.
This feud which has been dominating the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) will now come to its stunning conclusion when Adam Pearce and Colt Cabana face off in a "Seven Levels of Hate" match in Australia. According to the NWA, this match will not be sanctioned by the legendary organization because - according to President R. Bruce Tharpe - "the level of violence goes entirely past the accepted rule of sport, and we as a sanctioning body cannot willingly sanction a contest that is sure to push those levels past a point of no return."
How's that for drama?
I was able to get in touch with NWA Champion Adam Pearce before he boarded a plane for Australia. I asked him about how the feud got started; what it's like fighting Colt Cabana; and what to expect in the final stage of "Seven Levels of Hate":
Geek To Me: Last time we spoke, you were the newly crowned NWA Heavyweight Champion! What's happened since then?
Adam Pearce: Lots of time on planes. Canada, England, Germany, and Australia, not to mention most of the lower 48 have felt my wrath.
Geek To Me: I've gotta ask again, what was it like holding the belt that was held by such legends as Ric Flair, Harley Race and Jeff Jarrett? Has it been everything you thought it would be?
Adam Pearce: Best job in the world with the legacies of our industry's elite to live up to. A constant challenge and one that I have relished on five occasions.
Geek To Me: Now you've been involved in a feud with Chicago's own Colt Cabana, how did that come about?
Adam Pearce: He played for Deerfield, I played for Waukegan. We were bound to be enemies at some point.
Geek To Me: Both of you have worn the NWA championship belt, so who do you think wants it more?
Adam Pearce: At this point it isn't even about the 'ten pounds of gold'. It's a battle between two men that have known one another for a literal lifetime over who is better. It's that simple.
Geek To Me: Colt has gotten pretty popular for his podcast "The Art of Wrestling," so which do you think he's best at: hosting a podcast or wrestling?
Adam Pearce: He hosts a podcast?
Geek To Me: Oh snap! Okay, I imagine wrestling Colt is a lot like fighting Spider-Man in that he probably never stops talking during a match. Am I right?
Adam Pearce: Why would you imagine that? It's awfully hard to talk with my size 12 in your mouth.
Geek To Me: Time to talk some smack! Tell me how you are going to end the legend of Colt Cabana at your match in Australia!
Adam Pearce: First, shame on you for calling him a legend. Second, no one truly wins in war. For Cabana and I, "Seven Levels of Hate" has been every bit a war. I'm certain we'll both be glad when its done, but even more certain that neither of us will ever be the same.
