Unnecessary immediate Internet review: Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend"
Well, it's here. The moment where a pop tween sensation makes the transition from innocent crooning about love, basketball and being fly (all the while alluding to the heavy petting that'll take place after the Homecoming pep rally) to macho "I'm confident and totally going to light some candles so you get that I'm mature" gesturing.
Our little boy Bieber has grown up.
In "Boyfriend", the teen idol's new single out Monday on iTunes that dropped Sunday night, the now 18-year-old Bieber has cast off any notion of trying to be subtle. Girl (woman?)...you are about to get LOVED up on! (SwagSwagSwagSwagSwag)
Another thing to notice: The young gun seems to enjoy rapping, albeit not that well. A sample lyric: "Tell me what you like, yeah/Tell me what you don't/I could be your Buzz Lightyear/Fly across the globe."
Look, there's nothing wrong with Justin yearning to spit hot rhymes (that were written by Mike Posner, a co-writer on the song), but I yearn for the days of the Wahlberg men being the most awkward white male rappers on Earth. Also, there's a Gucci Mane reference in this song. If you can find it, I owe you a Coke.
It's a decent little ditty, one that makes me think that Biebs isn't trying to relinquish his title as Pop's young champion.
You can also buy it here, if so inclined.
