I read your column last week about going down on women and it made me wonder, do straight women like giving head? Or is it mostly just something they do to keep us happy? I’m certainly not complaining, but I was just wondering, especially since men don’t seem to be doing as good a job reciprocating.
—Respectfully, BJ Inquirer
Dear BJ Inquirer,
While it’s true that we women will do just about anything in exchange for a Craver Saver at White Castle, yes, some women like giving head simply for its own reward. Then again, “some” women like everything, even jorts and Bigfoot erotica. So, let’s get a little more specific, since you asked so respectfully.
According to a 2010 Esquire survey, helpfully illustrated by melting popsicle imagery, 30 percent of women “loved it” but 46 percent said they only “liked it because he likes it.” Nineteen percent said they “don’t like it, but they’ll do it,” and you can practically see them rolling their eyes as you read that, while a scant 5 percent say they “won’t do it at all.” Also in 2010, which apparently was a big year for blow job studies, research from the University of Alberta found that the majority of 18- to 25-year-old women were “excited” or “stimulated” by the act; only 10 to 20 percent of women felt “disgusted” or “bored” by it.
“[B]oth intercourse and oral sex were associated with mostly positive emotions overall, which suggests that most young women are engaging in these activities because they enjoy them,” researcher Brea Malacad said in PsychCentral. “Based on the results of my study, there is a percentage of women [just over 30 percent] who feel powerful when performing fellatio.” And all this time, I thought knowledge is power. It just goes to show that we should never take sex advice from “Reading Rainbow.”
Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this lady, Joanna Van Vleck from orgasmic meditation website One Taste, who claims she can orgasm from giving fellatio alone. “I actually don’t care if he likes it or not. But the crazy thing that happens when you make that switch is that he likes it 10 times more,” she told Cosmo. I watched the video of Van Vleck performing this “blow job for her” spectacle and it involved too much crying and snot for my taste. This isn’t to say she wasn’t having a good time, but that our versions of a “good time” differ somewhat.
In summation, there will always be some gals (and guys) who are doin’ it out of a sense of duty or reciprocity, some who genuinely enjoy and get off on it, some who would rather watch TV shows about teenage pregnancy and some who’d prefer the fish, thanks.
