Some actors choose to ignore the critics. And then some, like John Cusack, choose to take the critics on.

The Evanston native and “Hot Tub Time Machine” star went on the defensive Friday after his new film, “The Raven,” received a 22 out of 100 on rottentomatoes.com (the film review aggregator site uses reviews from around the country to determine each movie's score). Cusack felt the reviews for "The Raven" were unfair and went on a short Twitter rant – well, short for Cusack.

“The critics get mad when they are irrelevant,” Cusack tweeted in reference to the film’s low score, adding “… maybe a few critics r mad we sawed one (Rufus Griswold) in half!”

The film borrows from the real life of “The Raven” poet Edgar Allen Poe, except in this fictional story Poe is pursuing a killer whose murders are inspired by his literary work. Griswold, a real life poet who was critical of Poe’s work, appears in the film.

“The critics (were) actualy mean to the actual Poe too,” Cusack tweeted. “Time will tell the truth. … They get it later. Happens all the time … So many films not respected out the gate...then revisionism sets in.”

“The Raven” earned $7.25 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. According to boxofficemojo.com, the film’s production budget was $26 million.

On the record: “It’s in my hometown. I’ve always wanted to go see the show and I never got a chance to. So now it’s going to be the first year I’m seeing all these (bands) Black Sabbath and Red Hot Chili Peppers and such, and I’ll be able to play there as well. It really is surreal.” – Wheeling native Haley Reinhart talks Lollapalooza with The Hollywood Reporter. Reinhart will be the first “American Idol” alum to play the annual music fest.

Around the web: Did you know Pearl from the Funny or Die video, “The Landlord,” is Jeremy Piven’s niece and Adam McKay’s daughter? Yeah? Well, I didn’t until I read my colleague Chris Borrelli’s interview with McKay.

About this week: Author E L James will sign copies of her “50 Shades of Grey” books during a cocktail reception at The Standard Club Monday. … Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will perform Friday at the United States Veterans Arts Program Benefit Concert at Joe’s Bar, and Saturday at Steppenwolf Theatre’s 2012 Gala.

Fan friendly: “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno has a reputation for always making time for autographs and photos and lived up to it after performing Saturday at the OMNI Youth Services benefit at the Cadillac Palace Theatre. I hear Leno signed for everyone waiting outside – and that includes the guy holding a stack of photos.

Sightings: WWE Superstar and former “Real World” cast member The Miz had a late dinner at Japonais Saturday while in town for WWE's Extreme Rules pay per view at the Allstate Arena. … The Bears’ Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall dined at Mastro’s Steakhouse Thursday. The Minnesota Timberwolves’ Kevin Love, Green Bay Packers’ Jermichael Finley and Boston Red Sox’s Marlon Byrd were spotted, separately, at Mastro’s Friday. … Former “Seinfeld” actor Jason Alexander sang “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at the Cubs game at Wrigley Field Wednesday and had dinner at Sunda later that day. The Cubs’ Alfonso Soriano dined at Sunda April 22. … Cobra Starshop singer Gabriel Saporta partied at The Underground Saturday. … Several Blackhawks players, including Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith, dined at RPM Italian Wednesday before heading to Paris Club’s upstairs lounge, Studio Paris. … Cubs’ President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein hung out at Cuvee Wednesday.

Watch this: The 30-second teaser for VH1’s “Mob Wives Chicago” revealed that the reality TV show will debut June 10 and, um, that’s it. There is no dialogue and no footage from the actual show. I guess that is why it’s called a teaser.
